In this episode of "Formula Cloud", the VMware Cloud Foundation and CloudSimple drop anchor on Google Cloud, IBM goes "cloud-native" and optimizes to run on Red Hat OpenShift, while Microsoft takes the pulse of the expanding internet of things landscape.

In our top story, Google Cloud, VMware and CloudSimple's are forming a cloud troika of sorts to service organizations who run their VMware workloads in Google Cloud Platform. Strictly speaking, they will provide customers with choice and flexibility to run VMware workloads on-premises, in a hybrid architecture, or in the cloud.

"Customers increasingly want to run their mission-critical workloads, including those from VMware, in Google Cloud," said Thomas Kurian, CEO at Google Cloud, who added supporting these workloads will enable customers to "leverage Google Cloud's core competencies such as secure, performant, global and highly available infrastructure, artificial intelligence, machine learning and analytics."

In other words, with VMware on Google Cloud Platform, customers will be able to leverage VMware and Google tools and training to protect their investments, execute cloud strategies, and bring new services to market.

In other news, IBM has announced that it has transformed its software portfolio to be cloud-native and optimized it to run on Red Hat OpenShift.

"IBM is unleashing its software from the data center to fuel the enterprise workload race to the cloud. This will further position IBM the industry leader in the more than $1 trillion dollar hybrid cloud opportunity," said Arvind Krishna, SVP at IBM. "We are providing the essential tools enterprises need to make their multi-year journey to cloud on common, open standards that can reach across clouds, across applications and across vendors with Red Hat."

Meanwhile, Microsoft has released findings from a new research report designed to provide a global overview of the Internet of Things landscape.

The survey of over 3,000 IoT decision-makers in enterprise organizations indicates that IoT adoption is growing rapidly, and respondents believe 30% of their company's revenue two years from now will be due to IoT. Yet, the industry faces a significant IoT skills gap, as well as complexity and security challenges that may compromise business benefits to IoT if not addressed.
