BILLINGS, Mont. - July 30, 2019 - The 2nd Annual Walk for Kidneys will take place on Sunday, August 11, 2019, from 10am until 1pm at the Zoo Montana, 2100 Shiloh Rd., Billings, Montana. Event registration is $5 and includes free zoo admission. Online registration ends on August 8.
"We have over 140 people registered for the event and we'd love to have many more," informed Hilary Snell, DCI Billings receptionist, event co-organizer.
The one-mile walk is hosted by Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI), the nation's largest non-profit dialysis provider.
"Our non-profit dialysis organization asks employees to spread the word about kidney disease in order to raise awareness and potentially delay the need for dialysis. We don't want anyone to experience kidney failure if they don't have to," explained Snell.
The event is part of DCI's Purpose Projects where employees are encouraged to get to know people in the community, raise awareness of kidney disease and organ donation, and meet a local need.
"We decided to host a walk because we recognize that diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease and exercise can help manage these conditions," stated Kristin Evans, DCI Billings administrative support, event co-organizer. "A walk engages people in simple exercise that most people can do. It also gives us time to share kidney disease education and spend time with people in the community."
There are over 1,146 Montana residents living with kidney failure.
DCI operates eight dialysis units in Montana, providing in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. The DCI Big Sky clinic in Billings also offers chronic kidney disease education through the REACH Kidney Care program. The program teaches individuals how to maintain kidney function, proper nutrition, treatment options including pre-emptive transplants, and how delay the need for dialysis.
"If you are managing diabetes, high blood pressure, or know that you or someone you love has kidney disease, we'd love to meet you at the 2nd Annual Walk for Kidneys," invited Evans. "Please register online by August 8. We'll see you at the zoo!"
