This is a very different approach than that preferred by many marketers, who often talk about the “loyalty ladder” in which they try to lead customers from brand awareness to preference to loyalty to advocacy. But if customer loyalty worked this way, many more brands would have legions of devoted customers and an abundance of profit. Cultivating genuine loyalty is not akin to leading a horse to water. At times, these attempts at manufacturing loyalty are so convoluted and doomed that it’s almost as if marketers are trying to make a horse climb that ladder.
