Reliance Defence to Build Aerospace Park in Mihan, Called DAAP

Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt. has given its nod to Reliance Group for setting up a defence park in Nagpur that will benchmark international aerospace manufacturing standards and will be the largest greenfield project in India and South East Asia. The 289-acre facility will come up in Nagpur’s Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (Mihan) SEZ at a cost of Rs 6,500 crore and will be called the Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park (DAAP).

A letter of allotment was recently awarded to Reliance Aerostructure -- the defence arm of the Group—at Nagpur. Group Chairman Anil Ambani, along with CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the land allotment ceremony, where Ambani said, “We are deeply committed to defence sector. Our first acquisition was Pipavav. Project at Mihan would be the largest greenfield project not only in India but in South East Asia. We started on June 16, 2015, with first presentation and in less than 10 weeks we got the land. This is a record."

Mihan was picked after an extensive survey across India of all potential sites after which it turned out to be an obvious choice for its strategic advantages. Located close to the airport and with space for conducting air tests, it has superior telecommunications and social infrastructure. It is also located in the vicinity of an IIM with a talent pool of managers well-equipped for the industry.

DAAP will be built by Reliance Defence Ltd., a recently formed subsidiary of Reliance, and shall be global aerospace hub with in –house capabilities of ancillary component manufacturing and after-sales support. Its assembly lines will enable the park to produce fixed wing aircraft and aersotrcuctures for transport aircraft and helicopters for the defence and commercial sectors.

It shall have a smart city model and infrastructure and will facilitate employment by creating 1,500 opportunities in the primary job sector, 3,500 jobs in the secondary sector, and nearly 5,000 jobs in the tertiary sector. It will also be a one-stop aerospace hub worldwide where original aerospace equipment manufacturers (OEMs) would have their own shops.

Speaking at the ceremony, CM Fadnavis called Ambani the the ‘brand ambassador’ of Mihan, and thanked him for accepting his offer to set up a defence factory in Nagpur. He said that aircraft carrier Boeing, after pulling of a Maintenance Overhaul Repair (MRO) previously and quitting, is now reconsidering a return with an international airline. He also appreciated the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative for being a growth driver and encouraging public-private partnerships.
