BALTIMORE -- The WCS (WomensCollegiateSoccer.org (http://www.womenscollegiatesoccer.org/)) announced today its inaugural Women’s Soccer preseason “Players to Watch” list, with 11 players earning recognition. Select considerations were given for this outstanding group of talented players. Below is the complete list of preseason honorees.
Goalkeeper – Sydney Galvez-Daley – (R-JR) Valparaiso University (http://www.valpoathletics.com/wsoccer/#.VclOSflViko) (Hometown – Chicago, Ill.). Started all 20 games last season, logging 1892 minutes in the net, while boasting an impressive .43 GA (goals against) average.
Defender – Kadeisha Buchanan – (JR) West Virginia University (http://www.wvusports.com/teams.cfm?sport=wsoccer) (Hometown -Brampton, Ontario ). Started all 20 matches available at center back and helped the team post 12 shutouts, including five in Big 12 regular-season play, with four coming on the road… Recorded 3 goals and 2 assists… NSCAA/Continental Tire All-America First Team; only sophomore named to the first team and first sophomore in WVU history to score first-team accolades.
Forward – Janine Beckie – (SR) Texas Tech (http://www.texastech.com/sports/w-soccer/text-w-soccer-bo...) (Hometown – Highlands Ranch, Colo.)Spent the entire spring semester and summer in residency with the Canadian National Team … Granted an international competition waiver by the Big 12 Conference … Trained with the Senior National Team in preparation for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup … Called up to Canadian Senior National Team immediately following the 2014 season… Netted 17 goals and 4 assists last season while helping the Red Raiders to a 16-4-2 record.
Forward – Makenzy Doniak – (SR) – University of Virginia (Hometown – Chino Hills, Calif.) Netted 21 goals and 11 assists while leading the Cavaliers to it’s first ever National Championship title game appearance, coming up short to Florida State 1-0… Enters her senior year among 28 student-athletes tabbed on the watch list for the 2015 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy… A two-time NSCAA First-Team All-American and First-Team All-ACC honoree…Semifinalist for the 2014 Hermann Trophy, which was won by teammate Morgan Brian.
Defender/Midfielder – Carson Pickett – (SR) – Florida State University (Hometown – Fleming Island, Fla). Played in all 26 games, with 25 starts, as she helped the Seminoles to the College Cup for the fourth-straight season and their first NCAA National Championship… Led the team with 13 assists, which is tied for the second-most in a single season in FSU history… The 13 assists finished third in the ACC and No. 10 in the NCAA in 2014… ACC All-Tournament Team (2014).
Midfielder/Forward – Rose Lavelle – (JR) – University of Wisconsin (Hometown – Cincinnati, Ohio) An All-American last season, Lavelle was one of 28 women marked as a potential contender on the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List… An extremely versatile player with tremendous pace and field vision, Lavelle was given the Golden Ball at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship, awarded to tournament’s top player and selected as a finalist for 2014 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year.
Midfielder/Defender – Katie Bowen – (SR) University of North Carolina (Hometown – Auckland, New Zealand) Bowen was one of 28 women marked as a potential contender on the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List heading into her senior year… Became the youngest player to represent New Zealand at recognized international level when she played in a New Zealand U-17 match against Australia on her 14th birthday in 2008…She was featured in all three of her country’s match at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Forward – Margaret Purce – (JR) Harvard University (http://gocrimson.com/sports/wsoc/index) (Hometown – Olney, Maryland). In 2014, Purce was selected to the NSCAA/Continental Tire First Team All-Mid-Atlantic … First Team All-Ivy League … First Team All-New England honoree … Preseason MAC-Hermann Award Watch List Candidate … U.S. U-20 National Team member … Appeared in all 18 games, starting 16 for the Crimson… Paced the Harvard Crimson in scoring with 10 goals and 2 assists.
Midfielder- Nicole Waters – (SR) University of Dayton (http://www.daytonflyers.com/index.aspx?path=wsoc) (Hometown – Terra Cotta, Ontario)… Led the Flyers with 8 goals and 18 assists, helping them to a 12-9-2 record in 2014… Her 18 assists tied for fourth in the nation in total assists, her second straight year in the top five, as her 17 assists in 2013 led the nation.
Defender – Laura Liedle – (SR) Stanford University (Hometown – San Diego, Calif.) Started all 25 games in 2014, finishing with 3 assists and helping the Cardinals to a 20-2-3 record… Heading into her senior season, Liedle has started 70 games.
Midfielder – Natasha Howe – (R-JR) – Seattle University (Hometown – Mission Viejo, Calif.) In 2014, College Sports Madness Preseason First Team All-Conference … Second Team All-WAC … College Sports Madness First Team All-WAC … NSCAA/Continental Tire All-West Region First Team. Netted 10 goals and 4 assists, while helping team to a 15-4-3 record last season.
