The Farmers City Market- Propelling Small Local Start Ups by Christa Atherton

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- About:

To transform a tiny 100 sq ft brick alley shop into a collective market, supporting small local start up food producers & growers.

Have you ever dreamed of a grocery store without all the junk? This shop is what you have been waiting for. A Simple Tiny Farmers Market, within arm’s reach open 7 Days a week. Affordable Organic Milk, Eggs, Cheese, Frozen Local Meals & a revolving Showcase Supporting ONLY Local Producers, Growers & Food Inventors. A Collectively operated shop. We need your contribution so we can hit the ground running, convert this space, open the doors June 1st & show our Local Inventors how much this city needs them.

I stumbled upon this authentic Brick & Window shop on a wander through the historic Fan Tan Alley in Victoria BC. This spot is tiny, super central & best of all truly eye catching. I thought to myself, can I create what I myself as a busy mom really needs... One Spot where I can pick up Local & Organic products on my way home?

The Farmers City Market - an ever changing collective of Local Food Produces & Growers launching their Seasonal & Regional products. Working together as a Collective team we will re-Imagine the "retailer routine" & spark each other’s businesses, propelling each other into busy & successful individual endeavors. Cooperatively we will run the store and manage the responsibilities financially of running a full time shop. For 1 the task is HUGE- but with 15 times the help, we have 15 times the marketing power to truly launch each other’s sustainable products. Taking 2 shifts a month, the shop will be able to operate 7 days a week -keeping our overhead low enough to allot a budget to a full time Marketing Specialist, focused on bolstering each producer’s products. The selection of local products will change often on a bi weekly & monthly basis- keeping it fresh & peaking the neighbor’s curiosity often.

The shop itself is situated in the downtown core alongside the Very Busy Artisan Food Corridor, Pandora Street. Apartments and brand new condos surround the quaint shop. Tucked beside the smallest street in Canada, Fan Tan Alley is a huge piece of Victoria's History. Built in 1885, all brick from ground to roof- if the walls could talk they would tell stories of Gambling & Opium dens & Chinese family’s seperated from war. It’s Historic & we are aiming to do the same.
