Optimal Financial Management - Asian Economic News 21st January 2015

The majority of Asian markets have continued their gains today, except Japan whose markets were cautious ahead of the end of their BoJ two day policy meeting.

Chinese indexes were up during trading Wednesday after news that growth for 2014 came in above expectations. After good data on Exports and Retail Sales the government announced growth for 2014 had reached 7.4%, just under the 7.5% target many thought was unachievable.

The Hang Seng was up as much as 1.5% and the Shanghai index was almost 4% higher on intraday trading.

The Bank of Japan finished its 2 day policy meeting this afternoon. Little was changed and no major policy moves were announced. It was no surprise to many commentators who expect there to be further stimulus from the BoJ once the ECB has shown its hand and confirmed the level of its QE program.

Japan has given Prime Minister Abe a chance to fulfill his promise to turn around the country's economy and this was shown in the elections last December when they voted to keep him in power. His response was to delay the planned 2nd phase sales tax increase and to promise further stimulus to fight deflation. So far he has been good on his word and as we move into 2015 Japans economic position should improve.

A strong dollar will help both China and Asian in the beginning of 2015 and we can expect there to be increased factory orders and manufacturing over the coming months.
