RIGHT TO SKILL -not about survival but to master the journey called Life

DELHI, India -- “SKILL Development “has become the need of an hour. It is now being talked about everywhere in the world, from schools’ curriculum to college placements, from public sector companies to international companies, from the boss of a company to the national and international leaders. It is becoming the fastest growing concept in our country. Yes, you read it right, a concept not an art or a skill.

Why I referred ‘skill development’ as a concept because it is being explained in the students’ textbooks as a part of curriculum but not practiced enough till it become a skill of one’s life. The education system has to be knowledge based and not mark based. It will help the students to devote more time in learning and understanding. The courses provided by the institution should train the students for what is needed in the market than what is best for the institution. When institutions trying to sell a course rather than train students for course, the end product of the institution is a student with limited skill to survive the outside world. This is the reason why there is still a gap between demand and supply of skillful manpower in corporate and also most of the students face difficulty in coping up with new environment.

Mere introducing the importance of life skills in one’s life is not adequate, but implementing and practicing it in right direction with corrective measures is.

Skill development should begin during school days. However, schools and colleges concentrate on knowledge building rather than skill building. Colleges should start skill development program with private sector involvement to make it relevant with the needs of the corporate.

All private educational institutions should be kept under strict surveillance of government or needs to be nationalized to stop profit making from this business instead these should be skill developing centers. Nowadays quality in education has gone down due to the aim of educational institution has shifted from service to earning money.

Being a life skill mentor, I have been fortunate enough to travel many places across India, mostly rural and under developed areas like Kanchipuram, Dimapur, few villages in UP, Bihar and Maharashtra etc. The skill gap is huge in comparison to other urban places or metro cities not because of students’ ability to learn is less but because they don’t get sufficient resources and guidance like their counterparts in metro cities.

The students and teachers of such areas are not even provided the basic facilities of a school. In some areas teachers are not even properly qualified to teach as a teacher because qualified teachers don’t want to teach in areas where even basic amenities for sustainability are absent, which quite justifiable. Here, the government and state authorities should understand their responsibility and take proper measures for spreading education to each and every child.

Because of negligence of other person, the future of India, the young generation suffers. The government with the help of training companies or public school teachers should plan skill development programs for teachers of rural areas so that they can help students in grow.

Overall, skill enhancement is required for everyone whether a private school teacher or government school teachers because ultimately they are the ones who are shaping the future of India.

Theoretical knowledge is good but converting it into a practical knowledge, skills are required. And for this to happen, we have to train the masters in areas like: Emotional Quotient (EQ), Adversity Quotient (AQ) Spiritual Quotient (SQ), Practical Quotient (PQ), & Moral Quotient (MQ).

Many a times our present prime minister, Shri.Narendra.Modi has said in his speeches the importance of life skills in student’s life. He even intends to start more such skill development programs for rural areas and wish to make India a stronger nation.

However Right to Skill can only be implemented when the people who are responsible to inculcate themselves know how to live and handle adversities. And make sure that the concept of Right to skill not only help in developing individual’s on one area but also to help them in participating ,growing and keeping the balance in their life at all fronts.

Our nation requires People who can not only motivate inspire or encourage but who can actually create leaders and develop confidence and audacity among students.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.
