Come Home with Hugo Medina

PHOENIX -- Come “Home” this November with the latest painting series and solo exhibition of local artist and muralist, Hugo Medina in Shade Gallery at the monOrchid. Medina reflects upon his fifteen years in Phoenix Arizona as he explores the idea of old versus new phoenix through the changing landscape, architecture, and politics. “Home” is a showcase of Medina engaging portraits and dramatic landscapes. His love of Phoenix, the community and its people are the focal point of this new work. One can sense the connection and interest Medina has for his community and its people after living here in Phoenix for the last 15 years, said Curator Nicole Royse. The inspiration behind his recent exhibition is a simple yet important idea of home “what is home, what makes it home, all while watching downtown grow and develop into what it is today”, says Medina.

Medina began exhibiting his work in 2009 and has garnered an impressive resume, including the most recent exhibitions at Teritro Wine bar, The Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel and Willo North Gallery. Recently he received the Mayor’s Art Award for Public Art. Medina is cofounder of the Calle 16 Mural Project, which focuses on “utilizing my ability to inspire others, organizing events that builds on community while educating”, states Medina. In addition to Calle 16 Mural Project Medina continues to educate the youth through his teaching at Arizona State University where they now offer a community mural course. He is also currently he curator of The Coe House Gallery in downtown Phoenix. Through his artwork, murals, and curating Medina has continued to stay active and inspired as an artist and went on to say that “I have always loved painting murals, it helped feed the need to create on a larger scale while allowing me to interact with the community, where as my artwork is more personal and I create on a more intimate level, giving me a nice balance with both”.

The Opening Reception will be held on First Friday, November 7th from 6-10pm with the artist in attendance. An Invitational VIP tequila tasting sponsored by Peligoso Tequila will take place with the artist from 5-6:30pm on November 21st. The Artist Reception will be held on Third Friday, November 21st from 6:30-10pm open to the public.
