GURGAON, India -- Toyota Kirloskar Motors Private Limited (TKMPL) is a subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota Corolla is a 5-seater sedan launched in India in the year 2003. The 11th generation model of the car was launched in May 2014. The car, which was unveiled during the Indian auto expo 2014, earlier this year, has been named as Toyota Corolla Altis.
The 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis comes in 4 diesel versions and 5 petrol versions. There are two petrol automatic transmission variants for the Altis, named G AT and VL AT. The D4DGL is the top diesel variant and the VL AT is the top petrol variant. The Altis is priced between Rupees 12.28 to 16.90 lakh.
In the D segment of the luxury sedans in India, Corolla Altis is slowly stamping its presence in the form of increased sales. To make the car more attractive the grille has been redone and the head lamp design has been modified with projector type fittings for the top variants with added daytime running LED lamps. The other features of the car are externally adjustable body coloured electrical ORVMs with turn indicators, body coloured bumpers, LED clear lens tail lamps and the 15” alloy wheels.
This luxury sedan has spacious cabin with a manual AC, fabric seats, a tilt and collapsible steering column, power windows, a Din music system with CD player, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity for telephony and audio controls as well as a touch screen. Safety features include ABS, power windows, power steering, a central locking system, an engine immobiliser, 3-point seat belts and an electronic stability control system. Top variants have an automatic AC, airbags for the driver and the front passenger, leather seats, fog lamps at the front and the rear, cruise control, a GPS navigation system and rear parking sensors with camera.
The diesel versions are powered by 1364 cc, 87 bhp and 205 NM torque D4-D engines giving fuel efficiencies of 21.43 kmpl. For the petrol variants, VVTi petrol engines with 1798 cc volume, 138 bhp and 173 NM torque is used, which give mileages of 14.53 kmpl.
The physical dimensions of the Corolla Altis are 4620 mm length, 1776 mm width, 1475 mm height and 2700 mm wheel base. The suspension is McPherson type at the front and Torsion beam type at the rear.
The luxury sedan segment is packed with cars from most of the manufacturers. The build quality and features provided for the money spent on it give a slight edge to the Altis in the market. The Toyota Corolla Altis has to compete with other sedans like the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Jetta, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Cruze.
