Mobile Multi-tier Ebola Patient Isolation Unit Now Available for West Africa Outbreak

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Odulair(TM) LLC, both Africa’s and the world’s leading provider of mobile health clinics and mobile medical vehicles today announced the launch and availability of their patent pending Ebola Isolation Unit. The new facility design by Odulair is the first to provide multiple layers of patient isolation similar to the layers of an onion, with each layer following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for treating Ebola patients within a hospital.

The Odulair Ebola Isolation Facility can be utilized in conjunction with an existing hospital, or used to establish a complete, self-contained Ebola treatment and management center in any environment. The facility includes its own power generation system and a waste management system meeting the requirements to inactivate the highly contagious Ebola virus. The complete facility can be shipped airfreight and be fully operational in less than one month.

The complete facility includes a scalable number of patient treatment tents, containing multiple individual patient isolation rooms. Both the outer patient treatment tent and the inner patient isolation rooms are always under respectively increasing levels of negative pressurization to prevent the spread of the virus from one patient’s room to another; and to prevent the spread of the virus from the individual patient isolation rooms into the outer patient treatment tent. All air from the patient isolation treatment tents is processed through a HEPA Type A filtration system removing 99.99% of microscopic particles 0.3 microns in size and a germicidal UV lamp to irradiate and kill dangerous pathogens. Both of these mechanisms have been shown individually effective at eliminating the Ebola virus from the environment, the Odulair Ebola Isolation Facility utilizes the two mechanism simultaneously.

The facility also includes a medical staff work tent that is positively pressurized to maintain a safe environment for medical teams by preventing the entry of the Ebola virus into the tent. Additional components of the self-contained facility include a gross decontamination facility for removing surface contaminants from new Ebola patients and disinfecting hazmat suits after medical teams make contact with patients. It also includes a technical decontamination facility to achieve a thorough cleansing and removal of contaminants from both the medical staff and their equipment.

“When we launched the Mobile Clinics Africa Program in 2012, we never dreamed that we would be at the forefront of inventing an Ebola field isolation facility that provides an even greater degree of containment than most U.S. hospitals,” said Dr. Anita Chambers, President of Odulair, LLC. “But, working closely with our West African customers has gifted us with a unique understanding of the region and how to best implement national healthcare effectively and efficiently with urban and rural community outreach programs,” Chambers said.

In an announcement Thursday, August 28, 2014 the World Health Organization reported that the Ebola epidemic is still accelerating and could afflict more than 20,000 people before it can be brought under control. They also announced that priority is being given to needs for treatment and management centers. “Prior to the launch of the Odulair Ebola Isolation Facility, no such facility specially designed for isolating and treating those patients infected with, or potentially infected with Ebola existed, especially one that is self-contained, eliminates Ebola contaminated waste, and can be fully operation in weeks instead of months,” said Dr. Chambers. “We designed this unique facility to provide an immediate solution to those fighting so diligently to contain the outbreak,” Dr. Chambers said.

About the Odulair Mobile Clinics for Africa Program

Odulair founder and Fielding Graduate University Institute for Social Innovation Fellow Dr. Anita Chambers initiated the Mobile Clinics for Africa Program in 2012 in an effort to provide high quality, country specific custom mobile clinics to emerging nations at an affordable cost. To date, Odulair has designed mobile clinics to deliver healthcare for more than 40 medical specialties housed in platforms ranging from 30-foot (9 meter) highly mobile 4x4 truck-based clinics to 53-foot (16 meter) double expandable trailers. The Mobile Clinics for Africa Program creates collaboration between local African businesses and Odulair as the local businesses provide components for incorporation into the mobile clinics, which are then utilized to deliver healthcare within the country. This unique model of collaboration for the development of medical vehicles was developed by Dr. Chambers in an effort to stimulate both the economy of the recipient African country as well as small businesses in the United States.
