Mayor of Asheville, North Carolina issues Mayoral Proclamation recognizing National Poetry Month

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- In recognition of National Poetry Month in April, Esther E. Manheimer, Mayor of Asheville, North Carolina issued a Mayoral Proclamation for this literary celebration. Mayor Manheimer graciously joined several mayors from towns and cities throughout North Carolina, at the request of North Carolina poet, Kym Gordon Moore, to acknowledge the influence poetry has on the arts, humanities and education in her community.

The Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month in 1996, which is celebrated every April in the United States. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the nation.

The City of Asheville is steeped with historic and rich roots of cultural arts and cultural development. Opportunities to sustain the growth and connections of the cultural arts community continues to thrive locally. The emphasis on the importance of artistic development on a local level, centralizes and advocates for Asheville’s art, culture and community. Poetry is a thriving and vital part of the arts in this city. Asheville Wordfest (May 2-4, 2014), is a cultural event presented by the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir-Rhyne University, that will feature poetry, poetry animation, oral history, fiction, music and workshops. Asheville is the hometown of Thomas Wolfe, a major American novelist of the early 20th century. In addition, the national historical site for the home of American writer and poet Carl Sandburg is about thirty miles south of downtown Asheville.
