Black Velvet by Tobias Daniels: A Feature Length Documentary Goes To Germany

HOLLYWOOD -- LOS ANGELES, CA (April 1, 2014): Ever wonder why there are no Gay Pop Stars? Does race and sexuality still determine who’s allowed on the Billboard charts? Similar to the exodus of African American artists during the Jazz Era LGBT artist today are forced to find acceptance and fans in Europe, but does it have to be? Black Velvet, a feature length documentary by first time director Tobias Daniels explores the life of one African American LGBT artist T-Boy as he struggles to survive in Gotham, his pre “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” past in the Navy, to his niche fan base in Germany. Black Velvet features DP work by Emmy Winning Camera Operator Greg Harriott. With scenes featuring Sherry Vine and CAZWELL. You can help fund the crew’s journey to Germany to capture the films final chapter at

CREATOR STATEMENT: I sought to tell a fly-on-the-wall story of an underground culture in New York, but discovered a story of acceptance and struggle told through the eyes of the films main character T-Boy. Through our journey T-Boy reconnected with his estranged family and faced demons and shame from his pre “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” stent in the United States Navy. The film asks questions that I hadn’t been willing to face myself. Does being gay today still ruin your career? Is there refuge for gay artists? At the core of Black Velvet is a narrative about hope and struggle told through the eyes of an artist.

However, we need your support to complete the film. Your contributions go directly to equipment fees, crew pay, and travel expenses for the cast and crew to fly to Germany and capture the films final footage this June in Berlin as T-Boy takes the stage live at Christopher Street Day.
