2 Million Plus Operations in Dome Switch Life Test

ANDERSON, S.C. -- SSI Electronics Inc., recently completed a life cycle test with an imaged Lumvatech polycarbonate ultra thin planar light panel. The panel was assembled over a stainless steel tactile dome membrane switch. The panel, dome, and switch assembly were subjected to 2.9 pounds pressure applied by a 45 durometer silicone rubber actuator.

2,685,100 operation cycles later, the polycarbonate panel showed no signs of degradation.

Life Cycle Testing Method:

A 0.007 inch thick imaged polycarbonate light panel from Lumvatech was assembled atop a standard 12 key membrane switch manufactured by SSI Electronics Inc.

The membrane switch was made with 12 mm, 340 gram operate force stainless steel tactile domes. No graphic overlay was used for this mechanical life test. The actuation force was 2.9 pounds delivered through a round 45 durometer silicone rubber actuator.

The target life for this test was 1,000,000 (1 million) operations.

Life Cycle Test Results:

Key location 7 on the pictured switch matrix was tested with the Lumvatech panel imaged area.

The polycarbonate was checked at 850,000 operations and showed no signs of deterioration.

The test was continued past the target of 1,000,000 operations to 2,685,100 cycles.

The polycarbonate showed no signs of degradation. No visible mechanical cracking, no discernable deformation, or other physical deterioration was detected.
