It improves situational awareness with an entire area covered in a single view. Two or more cameras can be combined, which are either locally connected or IP cameras situated anywhere in the world. Desktop PC software allows a user to quickly calibrate the cameras and shows the live view of the scene to the operator. The creator, Tim Sheerman-Chase said: "This is an exciting technology with many potential uses. I hope the software can be further tailored to end users needs."
The primary advantages of MergeCam are increased situational awareness with the entire scene visible in a single frame, rather than multiple disjoint views or with a moving narrow view camera. Secondly, the panoramic system provides continual coverage of an area with reduced blind spots. There is also less operator intervention when compared to pan and tilt camera. Installations will also be cheaper, with less cameras required for coverage when compared to using multiple fixed cameras. This makes the system suitable for a wide range of safety, security, entertainment and surveying applications.
