The word “iconic” may be used increasingly indiscriminately but Tower Bridge is incontestably an internationally recognised symbol of London. Locals and tourists who have long admired the structure can now explore it more closely by participating in one of its annual engineering tours. Led by experienced guides, the two-hour sessions will include access to the Tower Bridge exhibition and walkways before descending into bridge engine rooms, control rooms and immense bascule chambers which lie below river level. Mime is a much-maligned art form - already you’re probably picturing irritating French artistes in Breton shirts pressing white gloves against imaginary glass panes. When done properly, however, it infuses circus skills, physical theatre, adult puppetry and animation to craft nuanced and provocative performance that can emote and engage without a dependence on dialogue. The London International Mime Festival returns to the capital this month – for the 38th time - and again offers a programme designed to enamour even hardened mime sceptics. The numerous shows taking place at the Southbank Centre include the UK premiere of Philippe Genty’s Forget Me Not, while Mat Ricardo’s Showman follows its premiere at last summer’s Edinburgh Fringe with a run at the Leicester Square Theatre.
