Tokyo, Japan – For young people leaving school, deciding what career path to tackle can seem like a daunting decision.
Sports-mad Healy Hammerton was one of those kids who wasn’t sure exactly what direction he wanted to take as he was nearing the end of his secondary schooling:
“I was very uncertain as to what I wanted to do when I finished school” said Hammerton. “For my final year at Murtoa College I chose a variety of subjects to ensure that I kept as many pathways open as possible.”
“I’d thought about taking a gap-year before going on to do more study so the opportunity to do an internship with Venture was a perfect fit - I was stoked when my application was accepted.”
Hammerton’s six-month internship will see him learning about all aspects of the adventure travel industry - from designing and leading small active group trips, coaching at sports training camps, financial management, as well as marketing and PR.
Hammerton will also benefit from hands on experience in a number of different countries, with a trail running adventure in China and high altitude training camp in Japan both part of his learning.
Gareth Johnson, General Manager of Venture, confirms that this type of internship is a valuable opportunity for young people such as Hammerton:
“If you have a passion for sport and the outdoors, and you don’t mind a bit of adventure and adrenalin, then being part of the Venture team that delivers these experiences for our clients really is a dream come true.”
“I’m going to be personally overseeing a number of the projects that Healy will be working on, including:
The development of trail running expeditions with elite international runner Suzuki Hiroko;
Altitude training programs for elite level sports teams, including AFL, in China and Japan;
Joining cycling trips in Southern China
Developing youth adventures and local community projects;
Delivery of open water swimming performance camps along Australia’s Great Ocean Road;
Creating some intense training programs for the athletes who are joining our boxing experiences in Japan;
Designing a multi-activity charity challenge within the Grampians National Park;
Further developing our junior movements and sports coaching programs - natural fitness/movement, tennis, basketball, trail running and swimming; and
Taking the lead role in the delivery of a range of outdoor, activity-based trips for our clients.”
“The internship with Venture will be an entirely new experience for me” said Hammerton. “I’m hoping that it will help me develop leadership qualities and heaps of other invaluable life skills.”
