Former Seton Hall University player Keon Lawrence (Newark, NJ) scored 50 points with 4 rebounds and 7 assists in his debut to lead seven players in double figures as the Jersey Express handled The Bronx Holy frames 150-100 on Saturday at Malcolm Shabazz High School.
The Express (2-1) had all 10 players scoring. Jason Smith (Paterson, NJ) scored 20 points while Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) had a double-double scoring 11 points with 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Charles Smith (Newark, NJ) scored 17 points and was just 3 rebounds short of having a double-double but he also had 3 blocks. Desmond Wade (Linden, NJ) put up 19 points with Donald Hennie (Hackensack, NJ) scoring 14 points, with 6 assists and 4 steals. The final player that had double figures is Terry Hill (Newark, NJ) with 10 points.
After the game, Coach Ortiz was asked about his view of the team and he said “We have to remember that with our talent, and I do believe that some of our non-starters can be starters on most ABA teams, that anything is possible. Our owner has been the mastermind in assembling, not only a great team, but a group of players that react and respond very well to my challenges and criticism as a sometimes demanding coach.”
Keon Lawrence was also spoken to after the game saying “I started off slow but Teammates told me to play my game and they got me going with an easy basket to get me started.”
The Express returns to action as they go on the road to face the Seven City Nights of Virginia on Sunday, December 1, 2013.
