When we started making The Pearl of Africa we knew that we wanted to do something more than just a film, that's when we started looking at ways to support Cleo and crowd-funding seemed to be the perfect way to do that, says director Jonny von Wallström.
The campaign makes it possible for Cleo to have her surgery in Thailand, but also to bring along her mother for moral support. All this will be captured in the movie, but throughout the campaign the audience will also be able to follow Cleo and the filmmakers journey online.
'The Pearl Of Africa' is a documentary takes the audience on a life changing journey as Cleo rewrites the story of a transgender girl, not as a disability or a phase, but as a diversity in our humanity that has for long been shrouded in darkness and misunderstood.
This campaign breaks new ground as the filmmakers use crowd-funding to support the Ugandan activist Cleopatra Kambugu. Documentary films are usually crowdfunded in order to be made, but what they're doing brings a fresh forward-thinking to it. Instead of giving the filmmakers money to go make the film you're directly supporting Cleo's struggle. Investing yourself in the movie both emotionally and financially, making a real difference today.
We knew from the start that we wanted to collaborate with Cleo to empower her through the project, creating this campaign makes that possible through a direct to audience initiative says Jonny von Wallström, director of The Pearl Of Africa. The film is set to premiere in 2014, for more information visit http://www.pearlofafrica.tv
