When you were born again, did you enter into a contract or a covenant with the Lord? Do you know the difference? If you don’t, you should, because it will determine your perspective of God and His relationship with you.
A contract says, “If you keep your part of the agreement, I will keep my part of the agreement. However, if you fail to keep your word, I am released and no longer obligated to keep mine.” It’s bilateral, conditional, revocable and dissoluble.
A covenant says, “I will keep my word and do what I said, whether you do or not.” It is unilateral, unconditional, irrevocable and indissoluble. And the most solemn covenant of all is one that has been established through the shedding of blood.
Virtually all the religions of this world equate God’s blessing and acceptance with self-righteousness. They treat their relationship with God like a contract. The problem is that the believer can never live up to the contractual agreement and therefore can never receive the blessing.
Biblical Christianity on the other is a true blood covenant made by God through the sacrifice of Jesus. By grace through faith we are saved. By His stripes we are healed and through His poverty we are made rich. God has literally exchanged our unrighteousness for the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus.
It’s so simple, and yet so difficult for our human mind to accept. We can’t earn it and we don’t deserve it. We must simply receive it.
