Texas 2013-2014 Hunting Season Looks Promising for Hunters

According to an article published by Shannon Tompkins, on the Houston Chronicle, habitat conditions across the state are generally good -thanks in part to a slight ease in the drought.

"The grip of drought, which has been around Texas' throat for most of the past decade, is still strong,” Tompkins’s article states. “But it eased just enough during spring and summer to allow timely but scattered rains that triggered a burst of vegetation and greatly benefited wildlife in the areas lucky enough to receive moisture. And that stands to benefit hunters.”

Texas has never had a bad deer season, but some are better than others.

According to Tompkins, this year’s deer season is expected to be an improvement from last year’s. With this season’s whitetail deer season shaping up as average –and with an estimated 3.5 million whitetail deer- Texas holds the title of the highest population of whitetails, more than any other state.

Additionally, the deer this season are in decent body shape. With the antler development of bucks expected to be average or even better than average.

While the drought plagued the state for much of the spring and summer, just enough rain fell to fuel vegetation for the deer to forage.

“Those rains also helped fawn production and survival; early estimates are that fawn production was good this year, boding well for coming seasons,” Tompkins writes.

For hunters who are heading out this season, experts recommend a hunting insurance policy –just in case. A hunting insurance policy can provide coverage in case of an accident, and also helps to protect hunters from liability –should they unintentionally cause damage to property.

Another great benefit of hunting insurance is that having insurance opens up more options for private hunting land. Since most landowners who lease land to hunters require the hunters to have insurance, having a policy in place makes it easier to find land that is available for hunting.
