WEST YORKSHIRE, U.K. -- A sports club which has turned around the fortunes of children in Wakefield is now the lucky winner of its own fortune - £500 courtesy of Miller Homes Yorkshire!

Max's Madcats and Paddy's Predators - a football and rugby team respectively - were formed by local police Community Support Officers to tackle anti-social behaviour and encourage children from the Warwick Estate, Knottingley to take up a new sporting hobby.

The competition, held annually by Miller Homes, is designed to offer a helping hand to local sports clubs which are an intrinsic part of communities.

"We are overwhelmed at receiving this prize and I speak for everyone involved in the clubs by passing on our heartfelt appreciations to Miller Homes," said PCSO 423 Aaron Riley and Coach of the Rugby team. "The competition prize money will help us develop the clubs further, invest in some new equipment and further develop the work that we have already done in offering hope and opportunities to children."

Miller Homes' annual 'Summer of Sport' Campaign was launched earlier this summer and local sports teams from across the region were invited to say why they were most deserving of the prize.

"Max's Madcats and Paddy's Predators are well deserving of the prize and we wish them continued success in giving the children opportunities through sport," said Steve McElroy sales director Miller Homes Yorkshire. "They are a real 'grass roots' club taking sporting participation back to basics."

A huge amount of entries were received from a wide variety of clubs and choosing the winner was a tricky task for former England football star Paul Reaney and Steve McElroy sales director of Miller Homes Yorkshire.

"Choosing a winner was quite challenging but I particularly liked our winners for the innovation they have shown and the results they have achieved," said Paul Reaney ex-Leeds United Footballer. "This is a team effort in the truest sense. The Police Community Support Officers have created a great way in which children can experience the highs and lows of competitive sport and as a team they have also tackled a whole host of other challenges including organising fund raising days and clearing snow from around elderly resident’s homes. I wish them every success for the future."

Max's Madcat's and Paddy's Predators will use the money to fund further equipment so that they can develop their football and rugby clubs further.
