BANGALORE, India -- The day started with the students energetically participating in athletic heats for 50 and 100 meters, depending on their age. We were truly astonished when young children finished the 100 meter sprint in as little as 13 seconds.
After a short break, in which we served milk and cookies, we moved on to shot put. Once again, their strength and enthusiasm for the sport astonished us. What was truly remarkable was, despite being competitors; every child cheered each other on. They showed such an admirable sense of teamwork throughout the day, even in the 200 meters and long jump events.
Biriyani with raita, followed by halwa for dessert made up lunch for all students, volunteers, and supervisors. Following the meal, we all sat down to watch a rousing match of cricket, with student volunteers commenting, and energetic students on the field, it was truly a pulse pounding event. The subsequent football match showed the same success; the spectators sat on the edge of their seats, and the students gave it their all.
After a quick relay race to conclude the sports for the day, we held our prize ceremony. Our principal, Mr. Aloysius D’Mello, and IB Coordinator, Ms.KavitaSinha did the honor of awarding the prizes. We hope that we have provided these children with the opportunity to showcase their athletic talent to the fullest extent.
This initiative is a part of our Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) programme, in which we reach out to the community and contribute our time and service purely voluntarily as part of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (http://www.greenwoodhigh.edu.in/ib.html) (IBDP). The event gives children who do not have many of the opportunities we do to a chance to utilize facilities and equipment needed to create a both enjoyable and competitive sports competition.
