Gateway RIA team’s participation in AppFest 2013 at IIM, Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD, India -- Gateway RIA team’s participation in AppFest 2013 at IIM, Ahmedabad - 2 teams from Gateway RIA Group, comprising 3 members each, participated in IAMAI Appfest 2013 (http://www.appfest.in/) held @ IIM, Ahmedabad, from 26th July, ’13 to 28th July, ’13. First day was Talkathon – different discussion sessions. Second day onwards, there were 2 parallel tracks, viz. Hackathon and Challengathon. Hackathon allowed participants to register their own concept and team for a mobile app while Challengathon required participants to form their own team but had to choose from different concepts thrown by sponsor companies. Both tracks had a time limit of 24 hours live coding to submit the app. Results were announced on 28th July, ’13. Both of our teams participated in Talkathon + Hackathon, and submitted their apps within time limit.

The first team created a P2P multiplayer game viz. T3Extended, a complicated and far more strategic variant of popular Tic-Tac-Toe game.

In this extended version, each square of 3 x 3 grid itself contains a miniature 3 x 3 board. The first player is allowed to mark his move on any square of any of the miniature board. All subsequent moves are to be made corresponding to the square of the previous move. For example, Player 1 starts by marking his move on bottom-left Square of the top left mini board. Next player has to now compulsorily mark a move on any of the empty square in bottom left mini board and so on. If a mini board is already full, the player is free to mark the move on any of the empty square of any mini board. A mini board belongs to a player first time achieving 3 in a row in that mini board. 3 such mini boards in a row are to be achieved by a player to win the game. Till date, no other version of this variant existed with P2P multiplayer functionality.

Second team built an innovative app viz. We meet, to set up and track meetings.

Once a meeting is setup along with location details, meeting participants can interact with and track one another's location in real time using Peer to Peer connection, Geo Location and Map integration. The app also allows to automatically set reminders, alarms and local notifications, corresponding to any meeting created or joined. Local notifications work even when the app is closed in the background or minimized. Real time chat helps locating a member easily.

Both apps were developed using Action Script 3 and packaged through Adobe AIR for iOS and Android. All participating teams got 3 minutes to present to jury and sell the idea behind their apps.

Although neither team made it to top 3, the entire experience from conceptualization to execution to presentation was far more enriching. We are geared up to participate in the next iteration. Kudos to teams for brilliant effort!
