LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- In order to offer educational opportunities to college students interested in pre medical and surgical training, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld at www.louisvillebones.com (http://www.louisvillebones.com) has partnered with Centre College to offer pre-med internships. The internships provide students with a professional learning experience in a medical environment.
Founded in 1819 and ranked by U.S. News in the top 50 national liberal arts colleges, Centre College is located in Danville Kentucky. Dr. Grossfeld joins the ranks of other sponsors of internships for students at Centre College including the Center for Disease Control, Johns Hopkins University, Kentucky Educational Television, and Toyota, to name a few.
During the summer of 2013 Dr. Grossfeld enjoyed working closely with two Centre College students. One of the students, Erica Ribenboim, Centre College Class of 2016, spent about five weeks shadowing Dr. Grossfeld at her orthopedic medical practice, Orthopaedic Specialists, in Louisville, Kentucky.
While working with Dr. Grossfeld, Erica was able to observe many different types of orthopedic surgeries and procedures including rotator cuff repairs, hip fracture surgery, ACL reconstructions and knee scopes. Dr. Grossfeld spent time answering Erica's questions, and she also taught Erica how to sew sutures. While at Dr. Grossfeld’s private practice, Orthopaedic Specialists, (see http://www.louisvillebones.com) Erica also learned about how medical clinics are managed.
During her medical student internship, Erica not only had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Grossfeld, but she was also able to shadow other surgeons. She was able to see an aortic valve replacement, cataract surgery, total knee replacement and more.
Talking about her experience, Erica explains: "Shadowing with Dr. Grossfeld gave me the opportunity to see a variety of different surgeries and allowed me to learn so much about not only orthopedic surgery, but about the medical field in general...Dr. Grossfeld explained each surgery as I watched and always answered any questions I may have had. Not only did I get the chance to observe, but she also taught me how to sew sutures--which isn't as easy as they make it look!...Whenever there was a free moment, she talked to me about what it's really like to work in medicine, something not all doctors are willing to talk about but something pre-med students need to hear...Overall, shadowing Dr. Grossfeld has been an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing a career in the medical field."
This focus on student mentoring and education is nothing new to Dr. Grossfeld. Along with her private Louisville orthopedic medical practice, Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Grossfeld also serves as a clinical instructor at the University of Louisville in Orthopedic Medicine. In June 2013 Dr. Grossfeld received the Departmental Award from University of Louisville’s Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine. This award is given to the faculty member that exhibits excellence and dedication in training University of Louisville medical residents.
Dr. Grossfeld also serves as a mentor through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) to female medical students considering a career in orthopedic surgery. She is also recognized as a Top 10 Orthopedic Physician in Louisville, Kentucky, by America Top 10, a website that ranks professionals in a variety of fields.
As a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Dr. Grossfeld completed her orthopedic residency at the University of Minnesota and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medicine Center. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).
