VAIL, Colo. -- Beautiful music is the hallmark of the coming week at Bravo! Vail as the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra concludes its residency with two exceptional concerts at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, and the Bravo! Vail Chamber Music Series continues to delight and gratify audiences under the direction of Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott. Bravo! Vail’s Free Concert Series and Little Listeners at the Library also continue with free performances at locations across the Vail Valley, including the Free Family Concert with the National Repertory Orchestra at the Ford Amphitheater on Sunday, July 14. In addition, the internationally acclaimed men’s vocal ensemble Cantus returns to Vail for six performances featuring repertoire ranging from plain chant and early Polyphony, to masterpieces for male voices, to folk songs from around the world.
Following their first spectacular weekend of concerts, The Philadelphia Orchestra led by Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin will complete its residency as they highlight the music of Mozart, Mahler and Verdi. On Friday, July 12, Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki joins The Philadelphia Orchestra in performance of Mozart’s stormy Piano Concerto No. 20. This concert program also features Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 whose fourth movement uses the text The Heavenly Life from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Des_Knaben_Wunderhorn) and features the young American soprano Susanna Phillips.
The Philadelphia Orchestra concludes its Bravo! Vail residency on Saturday, July 13 with Verdi’s Requiem – a masterpiece that offers “the drama of opera and the thrill of wonderful symphonic writing combined with stellar, virtuosic solo moments.” Of Verdi’s Requiem, the great German composer Brahms wrote, “Only a genius could have written such a work.” Joining The Philadelphia Orchestra are Angela Meade, soprano; Karen Cargill, mezzo-soprano; John Mac Master, tenor; and John Relyea, bass-baritone, as well as the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Chorus, led by director Duain Wolfe. Colorado Public Radio will also broadcast the concert statewide beginning at 6 p.m. Come hear why Verdi’s Requiem is recognized as featuring one of the greatest moments for soprano in all of the classical music literature this weekend.
Bravo! Vail’s acclaimed Chamber Music Series continues with three concerts in the coming week under the direction of Anne-Marie McDermott. McDermott, who has an illustrious career as a chamber musician, concert pianist and recording artist, has assembled the world’s foremost collaborative musicians to perform with her all summer long across the Vail Valley. On Monday, July 15, McDermott and the Calder Quartet perform Mozart Piano Concertos from the early 1780s, presented in the composer’s sanctioned renditions for string quartet. Recently recorded for Bridge Records, the CD of McDermott/Calder Mozart Concertos will be released for the first time to the public at the concert.
