RUGELEY, U.K. -- The summer holiday season is almost upon us and, with a record amount of rain fall this spring, many have decided to ditch the ‘staycation’ in favour of sunnier climates.
But before packing the essential sunglasses and flip-flops, take a moment to consider the safety of home before locking-up and leaving.
Jackie Woodward, sales manager for Jelson Homes, comments: “Burglars are well aware that the adverse weather conditions are sending a lot of people packing, and that’s exactly why we have compiled our top 10 list of things to do in the home to keep burglars at bay.”
JELSON’S TOP 10 HOME SAFETY TIPS
1. Check window locks. Government statistics show that 30 per cent of burglaries happen through windows, so if you have locks – use them.
2. Have a burglar alarm but hardly use it? If so, now is the time to take action. Check that it works correctly and remember to put it on before leaving.
3. Fit timers to upstairs and downstairs lights a few days before setting off, so that you can check they all work correctly.
4. Keep ladders, hammers and other equipment which could be used for breaking in, out of sight.
5. Keep valuables out of sight and preferably store them in a safe.
6. Fit a radio timer to come on and go off throughout the day.
7. Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries and ask a neighbour to push post right the way through the front door.
8. Grass is a great give-away, so make sure you mow before jetting off.
9. Close curtains at the back of the house, as this is where burglars can roam without being seen by others.
10.Back gardens are the most vulnerable part of the house so for extra security, plant and train climbing roses to grow up fencing as an extra (spikey but attractive) deterrent.
Jackie adds: “Some of these simple and easy-to-adopt tips don’t take long, but because we are all too often in a rush to get the holiday packing done and to head off to the airport, house security can often be taken for granted and often fall off our ‘to do’ list altogether.
“With a little forward planning we’re sure that by doing even just a few of our top 10 tips we can help to keep more than the rain away this summer.”
