RICHMOND HILL, Canada -- The floor is the foundation to any home and maintaining a proper and effective flooring system is important to make the most out of any home. For the most part, homeowners are unfamiliar with proper flooring maintenance answers, which is why popular Toronto-based flooring company, M3 Flooring and Interiors, is now answering questions via online video for homeowners all over the world. Their most recent video answers a popular question about wood flooring buckles and cups and how to avoid these flooring inconsistencies.
One of the videos is related to problems with buckling or cupping in wood floors, that for most part are caused by excessive humidity inside or under a house. Monitoring the humidity inside a home with a humidity gauge and checking that all areas of a home are under 60 percent relative humidity can help prevent flooring buckles and cups.
Mike Yasrebi from M3 Flooring and Interiors says, “First you need to find the source of the problem. Moisture is the most common cause of buckling floors. Moisture can come from leaking pipes, wet basements, crawl spaces, even plywood exposed to these elements during construction. Houses without proper ventilation can also damage the floor. If you cannot find the source of the problem, you can call flooring specialists.”
To reduce humidity inside of a house, homeowners can take a number of actions. First, homeowners can run a properly sized air conditioner during humid weather, especially in the summer time. Homeowners can also use bathroom vent fans that are vented to the outside while showering and bathing as well as 10-15 minutes afterwards. Homeowners can also run a kitchen stove vent fan that is also vented to the outside while cooking to help reduce moisture. Checking that the clothes dryer vent is unobstructed and vents to the outside of the house can also help as well as having a dehumidifier if the previous suggestions are not enough to reduce humidity levels to below 60 percent.
