Jeffrey Silberschlag Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Music

LEONARDTOWN, MD, January 27, 2025 - Jeffrey Silberschlag has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Stemming from a 17-person family of celebrated musicians, spanning three generations, Mr. Silberschlag was driven to carry his family's legacy. His great-grandfather was a trumpet and horn player in the European circus, while his father and brother honed their skills as jazz drummers. As a young boy, his grandmother taught him to play the trumpet. His innate talent and naturally perfect embouchure - an essential part of trumpet playing, were quickly recognized by friends, family, celebrated teachers, and audiences worldwide.

Mr. Silberschlag has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as conductor, trumpet soloist, orchestral player, and educator.

He has left his mark on the music world as the music director and conductor of the Chesapeake Orchestra and as the co-director, and principal conductor, of the Alba Music Festival in Northern Italy. Additionally, as a champion of orchestral training for young people, he serves as music director of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra, originally founded by his teacher, Angelo Gatto. Mr. Silberschlag frequently serves as a guest conductor for The Romanian State Symphony, and has conducted The Bulgarian Philharmonic in Italy, The Orchestra of Eastern Europe in Sicily, I Soloisti di La Scala, The St. Petersburg Soloists, The London Philharmonic. and several other orchestras. As a trumpet soloist, Mr. Silberschlag has recorded with The London Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Seattle Symphony, The Czech Radio Orchestra, The Warsaw Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI di Torino, and The Maryland Bach Aria Group. Many works were written specifically for Mr. Silberschlag by celebrated composers, including Morton Gould, Lorenzo Ferrero, William Thomas McKinley, David Froom, John Carbon, Leo Eylar, Arnold Saltzman, and Robert Hall Lewis.

After earning a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music and studying at The Institute for Advanced Musical Studies in Switzerland, Mr. Silberschlag won and held principal trumpet positions with The Italian National Symphony RAI-Torino, The Jerusalem Symphony - IBA, (where he met his wife to be, Deborah Greitzer, then principal bassoon of the orchestra), The New York City Opera- National Company, The Mid-Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, and The Virginia Chamber Orchestra.

Drawing on his considerable expertise and steadfast passion for music, Mr. Silberschlag has been a tenured Distinguished Professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland, where has held responsibilities as the music department chair, professor, artistic director, and head of music performance. In his work with the College, he recruits faculty and students, develops the curriculum, manages the budget, and liaises between the College its surrounding community and Italy. Alongside his academic pursuits, Mr. Silberschlag loves sharing all the information that his celebrated teachers shared with him. Those world-famous artists/teachers included trumpet professors William Vacchiano, Pierre Thibaud, Mel Broiles, Gerard Schwarz, Charles Colin, R. Chandler Goetting, Robert Nagel, and Larry Skinner.

Mr. Silberschlag has many successful and devoted students who perform professionally and work to further music.

Over the years, Mr. Silberschlag served as a guest resident at universities and conservatories worldwide, including the Royal Academy of Music in London, the New England Conservatory in Boston, the Beijing Conservatory in China, and the University of the Performing Arts in Kyoto, Japan.

Throughout his career, Mr. Silberschlag has been honored to perform alongside such artists as Mstislav Rostropovich, Hilary Kole, Melissa Errico, Leon Bates, Brian Ganz, Jos Cueto, Larry E. Vote, Isaac Stern, Zubin Mehta, John Wallace, Gerard Schwarz, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Luciano Pavarotti, Fruhbeck D'Burgos, Robert Bright, and Guiseppe Nova.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Silberschlag remains dedicated to the music industry as a judge for the "Wammies"/The Washington, DC Area Music Awards. He was President of The St. Mary's County Arts Council and a longtime Board member. Mr. Silberschlag is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

For his outstanding accomplishments, he has been recognized with the Octave Higher Award from Bowie State University, The European Union of the Arts Prize for Artistic and Cultural Activities, and St. Mary's College of Maryland's Norton T. Dodge Prize for Creative and Scholarly Achievement. As a 15-year-old, he was designated as a "Star of Tomorrow" from Morgan State University. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most professional pride in having over 30 works composed specifically for him, performing on 17 CD recordings as a trumpet soloist and conductor, and watching his students thrive after their graduation from St. Mary's College of Maryland.

However, above all else, he and his wife Deborah are thrilled to have raised two sons, Zachary and Nathaniel, themselves successful in the music world. They serve as principal players in two world-class orchestras, The Israel Philharmonic and The Cleveland Orchestra, respectively.

Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Mr. Silberschlag credits his success to his passion for music and the support of his wonderfully talented family, especially during his formative years.

Within the coming years, he intends to continue overseeing the Alba Music Festival, which is currently in its 21st season, and The Chesapeake Orchestra currently in its 30th season. Ultimately, Mr. Silberschlag aims to participate in more performances and recordings as a conductor and trumpet soloist, nurture the growth of his orchestra, attend his son's concerts, and eventually help raise his grandchildren.
