Joel Robert Coats, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Education

AMES, IA, January 17, 2025 - Joel Robert Coats, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As a seasoned educator with years of professional expertise, Dr. Coats not only excels as a distinguished professor of entomology and toxicology at Iowa State University but also demonstrates a deep and lasting commitment to his students. He taught a range of subjects, including pesticides in the environment, principles of toxicology, insecticide toxicology, special topics in insect toxicology, and toxicology methods. His dedication to his students is a testament to his passion for education and research.

Before establishing himself professionally, he earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology from Arizona State University. Subsequently, Dr. Coats expanded his knowledge by completing a PhD in entomology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Next he conducted environmental toxicology research as a postdoctoral research associate with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Coats gained valuable expertise in education and research as a visiting professor at the University of Guelph

Throughout his career, Dr. Coats has mentored over 50 graduate students and contributed to nearly 250 publications discussing pest management with natural products, insecticide modes of action, the biodegradation of pesticides in organisms and in the environment. His publications include 15 books, often in collaborations with former students or postdocs. Alongside other scholars, Dr. Coats has contributed to many scientific journals such as the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Nature Communications, Bioscience, Environmental Science and Technology, Pest Management Science, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. He currently serves on scientific advisory boards for the Gates Foundation Malaria Program, the Department of Defense Deployed Warfighter Protection Program, and the CDC Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector Borne Disease; he is also Chair of the Finance Committee of the Agrochemicals Division of the American Chemical Society.

While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Coats takes the most pride in training his many graduate students and postdocs, as well as developing novel natural insecticides and repellents; he hold 24 patents on them His journey to success has been paved with determination, patience, and persistence, values instilled in him by his parents and the students he has guided through their master's and PhD programs. This resilience and strength have been instrumental in his achievements and will continue to guide him in his future endeavors.
