He has predicted a significant increase in the number of people wanting to sell their stakes in private funds and companies over the next five to 10 years, comparing this trend to the dynamics of the real estate market between 2007 and 2012. His extensive experience allows him to synthesize vast amounts of data from various aspects of commerce and economic life.
Mr. Aronstein's career began as a strategist at Merrill from 1980 to 1986, where he developed a comprehensive top-down view of global macroeconomic and market conditions. This role allowed him to work closely with institutional clients managing funds. In late 1986, he co-founded Comstock Partners LC, which managed one of the Dreyfus mutual funds and emerged as the best-performing mutual fund in the United States during the 1987 market crash.
Following his success at Comstock Partners, Mr. Aronstein launched West Course Capital in 1991, a venture that evolved into a natural resource-based private equity firm, which he managed for eight years. In 2006, he founded Marketfield Asset Management, where he served as president and chief investment officer until 2023 before transitioning to his current role at Antiquity Capital.
Mr. Aronstein's academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on 19th and 20th-century American and British literature from Yale University. Beyond his education, he attributes his success to his adult conversion to Christianity, which helped him navigate and refine his character over the years.
Throughout his career, Mr. Aronstein has received several honors and recognitions. He was named Athlete of the Year at Stuyvesant High School in 1970 and one of the Outstanding College Athletes in America during his time at Yale University in 1973. In the mid-1990s, the Financial Times acknowledged him as one of the ten greatest investors of the decade in their Global Guide to Investing.
Mr. Aronstein has also made significant contributions through his publications and projects, having co-authored "A Natural Way to Golf Power," published by Harper & Row in 1975. During his tenure at Merrill, he produced quarterly analyses that became widely circulated research products for the firm, authored approximately 40 quarterly analyses and delivered lectures at numerous institutions.
Mr. Aronstein considers his greatest accomplishment to be cultivating a fulfilling personal life alongside his professional achievements. He takes pride in having a strong marriage of more than 40 years and raising two children who embody the values and character he admires. Professionally, he has successfully launched multiple ventures within a similar domain, reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit and drive to continuously innovate.
Throughout his career on Wall Street during times when ethical standards were often questionable, Mr. Aronstein credits the two colleagues for whom he worked during his time at Merrill Lynch for keeping him grounded and establishing a strong awareness of the importance of personal values.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Aronstein has been actively involved in various civic organizations. He serves as a trustee for the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, which provides comprehensive scholarship packages to college students in the United States. He also supports many initiatives that promote educational opportunities and enhance the lives of children. Additionally, he is actively involved with the Episcopal Church and its programs.
In his personal life, Mr. Aronstein enjoys golf and building treehouses and playhouses. In the upcoming years, he is committed to assisting Scott Siemens at Antiquity Capital in establishing the company as a significant source of value within the financial management industry.
