Dr. Shaw is a distinguished expert in science and higher education with a career spanning over four decades. He is currently honored with the title of associate professor emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz, since 2014 after serving in multiple professor roles at the institution since 2003.
Dr. Shaw's academic journey includes a Doctor of Philosophy in science education from Stanford University, earned in 1994. His doctoral research was recognized with the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) in 1995, marking a significant milestone in his career. This early recognition set the stage for his future contributions to science education.
In 2003, Dr. Shaw joined the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) as an assistant professor. Over the next seven years, he made substantial contributions to the university's science education program, which led to his promotion to associate professor in 2010. In this role, he continued to advance the field through innovative teaching methods and research until he achieved emeritus status in 2014.
Currently, Dr. Shaw continues to contribute to UCSC's teacher education program, serve as associate director for a STEM workforce development initiative in Hawaii, and consult on a science education curriculum project with colleagues at Northern Arizona University. His professional achievements are complemented by his multiple leadership roles within NARST, where he currently serves as president.
Dr. Shaw attributes much of his success to the influence of his mother, who was deeply committed to education and served in the local public school system. Her dedication and passion for education have been a significant source of inspiration throughout his career.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Shaw enjoys being with family and friends, often engaging in international travel and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and snorkeling. Looking ahead, he plans to complete his tenure with NARST by 2026 and embark on new endeavors focused on nature conservation. He aims to revitalize a previous project from his master's studies at Stanford University involving a formerly endangered bird species at the university's biological preserve.
