Mark P. Little Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Radiation Epidemiology

WASHINGTON, DC, August 21, 2024 - Mark P. Little has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Little's journey in radiation epidemiology began with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge followed by a DPhil (PhD) in the same subject from New College, Oxford. His career took a turn when he joined the Central Electricity Generating Board in the UK, which operated nuclear reactors. His fascination with radiation was sparked here, setting the stage for his future in the field. His career path led him to the UK National Radiological Protection Board (now the UK Health Security Agency) in the early 1990s, where he gained valuable research experience. In the early 2000s, Dr. Little moved to academia, teaching at Imperial College's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (now the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics).

Dr. Little's influence in the field of radiation epidemiology is far-reaching. His roles as a senior investigator with the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, and adjunct professor with the University of Manchester, and Oxford Brookes University have allowed him to hone his expertise and share his knowledge. His contributions extend beyond research, as he has been invited to speak at over 100 national and international meetings and has co-authored over 370 articles and other publications, among them in respected journals such as the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the Lancet, the Lancet Oncology and the Lancet Haematology.

A seasoned expert, Dr. Little has done much analysis of environmentally exposed groups, specifically the Japanese atomic bomb survivors, those exposed from the Chornobyl nuclear accident and various medically and occupationally exposed groups to assess radiation induced cancer and non-cancer risk; in many of these groups he has assessed risks both in the directly exposed populations and in their offspring. Dr. Little is a member of the Radiation Research Society, the American Statistical Association, the Society for Radiological Protection, and the Royal Statistical Society. In addition to his professional endeavors, Dr. Little further contributes to advancing public health as a consultant with the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and as Member of Council for the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

Dr. Little received the Founder's Medal from the Society for Radiological Protection in 1999. While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Little takes the most pride in his latest publication, a meta-analysis of radiation and cardiovascular disease, in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), also a pooled analysis of leukemia in ten childhood exposed groups, in the Lancet Haematology, and analysis of cataract in the U.S. radiologic technologists, in the European Journal of Epidemiology. All analyses emphasize risks associated with low dose radiation exposure.

Dr. Little's career has been a testament to the power of hard work and dedication, but he remains humble, attributing his success to diligent effort and good fortune. He looks forward to remaining open to new opportunities.
