Mr. Beirne has made significant contributions to the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade and the broader Irish American community. Since 2016, he has served as the chief administrative officer of the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade, a role that underscores his dedication to preserving and promoting Irish culture in the United States. Previously, he was the executive secretary of the parade from 2002 to 2016, and he has been a committee member for the cultural event since 1988. Additionally, he has been the chairman of the St. Patrick's Day Foundation in New York City since 2012, further solidifying his leadership within this iconic celebration.
Concurrent to his St. Patrick's Day undertakings, Mr. Beirne has been a science educator at Eastchester High, School since 2001, and at Westchester Hebrew high school since 2011, following a 13-year tenure as a teacher at a Catholic school in the Bronx, where he began his endeavors in education. He started his career in 1996 as an area manager for Volac Animal Feeds in Ireland before moving to the United States.
Mr. Beirne's academic background is diverse, beginning with coursework at St. Mary's College, Hollymount National School and the University of Galway. In 1982, he obtained a diploma in agriculture, agricultural operations and related sciences from Atlantic Technology University Mountbellew Campus, followed by a Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences from University College Dublin in 1984. He subsequently earned a Master's Degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York in 1996, graduating summa cum laude.
Throughout his career, Mr. Beirne has been recognized for his contributions and achievements with numerous awards, including the Golden Bridge Award in 2023 and a New York City Hero Award from the Bowling Green Association in 2023. He was also honored with the Irish Arts & Culture Medal by the Irish Echo Newspaper in 2021 and was named New York City's Irishman of the Year by the New York City Council in 2017, among many other accolades.
In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Beirne is actively involved in various civic organizations. He has served on the executive committee and advisory board of VotingRights.ie since 2021 and has been a member of the Irish Ad Hoc Committee to Protect the Good Friday Agreement in Washington, D.C., since 2021. He was also previously a member of the New York State Ancient Order of Hibernians from 1998 until 2013. Further, he has contributed to scholarly publications, including "A Lost Opportunity for Ireland, Citizenship Papers and the Citizenship, Emigration, and Voting Rights Post-Brexit" in 2021 and "Emigrants need a diaspora representative in the Irish government," published by IrishCentral in 2020.
Looking ahead, Mr. Beirne is planning to run for the Irish senate and complete a history book he is currently working on entitled "Emigrant Contribution to Ireland". His multifaceted career and personal interests reflect a deep commitment to education, cultural preservation and civic engagement.
