Dr. Patterson's career journey is a testament to her adaptability and versatility. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in music from Fitchburg State University, she embarked on a diverse nursing career. She started at The Nashoba Community Hospital in Ayer, Massachusetts, then transitioned to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's Department of Nursing Service. Her professional journey has seen her in various roles, from a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, faculty member and consultant, at esteemed institutions such as the University of Massachusetts' Medical Center, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, the University of Massachusetts Memorial Health, and the Yale School of Nursing. She has also shared her knowledge and experience with students at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, as an associate professor. Notably, her leadership skills have been honed through executive roles with Stryker Performance Solutions, Optimizing Performance Solutions, Ximedica, Intralign Healthcare, and the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, inspiring others with her ability to lead in various healthcare settings.
Drawing on years of professional experience, Dr. Patterson works in Health Information Systems division of clinical & economic research, and special clinical development and innovations with Solventum, formerly 3M. Throughout her career, she has also leveraged her vast knowledge through textbook chapters such as "Musculoskeletal Care Modalities" in a medical-surgical nursing textbook and "Musculoskeletal Disorders" in "Practice Guidelines for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Additionally, Dr. Patterson has published several peer reviewed research publications, including, "Adolescent Experience with Trauma and Orthopedic External Fixation", "Impact of external fixation on adolescent and integrative research review" and "Follow-up skeletal surveys in suspected child abuse", as well as clinical articles, national and international presentations such as "Issues and Strategies for nurses caring for adults with osteoarthritis", "Implication of a critical skill set for orthopaedic nurse practitioners". "Lisfranc's or Tarsometatarsal fracture-dislocation" "Development of algorithms for safe patient handling of orthopedic patients" and "Prevention: The Only Cure for Pediatric Trauma." Dr Patterson has devoted much of her time aiding clinical and process improvement in surgical and orthopedic servicelines in over 35 hospitals across the country.
An expert in her field, Dr. Patterson has expanded her knowledge by earning a Master of Science in Nursing specializing in maternal-child health from Boston College, a PhD in nursing research from the University of Massachusetts' Chan Medical School, and various certifications through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the Orthopedic Nurses Certification Board, and 3M. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the American Nurses Association, National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, AORN, Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. In conjunction with her educational and professional endeavors, Dr. Patterson has also given back to her community through the Girl Scouts, Massachusetts Medical Reserve Corps and the YMCA of Greater Boston.
In light of her outstanding work, Dr. Patterson has been honored multiple times, earning such prestigious awards as the Clara Donahoo Memorial Lectureship Award from NAON, the President's Award for Excellence from the YMCA, the Nurse Excellence Award from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and several research grants. She has also been recognized with the Diamond Award for Outstanding Employee of the Year through Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and an Advocacy Award for safe patient handling. While her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Patterson takes the most pride in improving care for people with musculoskeletal diseases and injuries and supporting the creation of the National Orthopedic Nursing Society in Australia and New Zealand (ANZONA) serving as a keynote speaker at their first joint meeting.
Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, Dr. Patterson credits her success to Walter, Rebecca and Shawn's support and encouragement, setting goals, and passion for helping others and making a positive impact. In the coming years, she intends to work to illuminate the need for tracking and improving outcomes and reducing complications following outpatient procedures, by continuing her research and efforts in the Ambulatory Potentially Preventable Complications methodology (AM-PPC) work with Solventum. She will continue to mentor other women in orthopedic nursing leadership.
