VENICE, FL, August 08, 2024 - Dr. Walter L. Edgerton Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Edgerton, a distinguished professional in health care and business, has made significant contributions to the pharmacy field over his extensive career. Most recently serving as the president of Innovative Pharmacy Consulting from 2002 to 2017. While at Baxter he oversaw the management of three automated pharmacy systems, including the highly successful Delta Hospital Pharmacy System.
Dr. Edgerton began his management career as the director of pharmacy services at Bascom Palmer University of Miami Hospital from 1977 until 1979. He then served as the corporate director and vice president at Basic American Medical between 1979 and 1985. Starting at Baxter Healthcare in 1985, he held the position of vice president of the systems division until 1990. Following this, he became the vice president at West Haven Pharmacy Services for one year before moving on to Venice Hospital as the managing director of clinical and support services from 1991 to 1996. He then took on the role of vice president of pharmacy operations at Davidson Drugs until 2002, at which time he joined Innovative Pharmacy Consulting.
During Dr. Edgerton's tenure at Baxter Healthcare, his division developed an operational automated pharmacy system that became the top choice nationwide, serving as his most notable career accomplishment. This system was continuously enhanced to meet the evolving needs of the pharmacy health care industry and included a robust clinical system for thorough checks on drug interactions, appropriate dosing and contraindications. This innovation significantly improved patient care and safety by enabling pharmacists and physicians to fine-tune drug regimes for individual patients.
Dr. Edgerton's educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy in 1967 and a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1968 from the University of Michigan. In 1988, he completed a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Florida. The combination of his business acumen and pharmacy background allowed him to understand patient needs and apply financial expertise throughout his career.
In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Edgerton has been actively involved in various industry-related organizations. He is a past president of both the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Southwest Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Florida Pharmacy Association. His certifications include being a registered pharmacist in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio, as well as a consultant pharmacist in Florida.
As Dr. Edgerton enjoys retirement, he reflects on a career marked by innovation and dedication to improving patient care. His legacy in the health care industry will undoubtedly continue to influence future generations of pharmacists and health care professionals.
