Karla Traynor Smith Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Civil Engineering

SUNNYVALE, CA, August 07, 2024 - Karla Traynor Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by years of technical expertise and project management experience, Ms. Traynor Smith excels as a senior project manager at Stanford University. Since obtaining this role in 2021 she has taken on the management of a complex watershed restoration project in collaboration with state and federal agencies, reviews proposals, executes contracts, effectively communicates with a diverse group of stakeholders and presents regular status updates to executive leadership on the Land, Building and Real Estate team at Stanford. Before taking on the senior project manager role, Ms. Traynor Smith developed her network at Stanford with 14 years of responsibility as a civil engineer for the Utilities group at Stanford and a Project Manager in the Zones group.

During the early stages of her career, between 2000 and 2006, Ms. Traynor Smith amassed a wealth of technical expertise on civil works projects at several consulting firms in San Diego. Within these roles she prepared the plans, budgets and schedules for civil engineering projects at Boyle Engineering, gained valuable expertise as a water resources engineer for Hunsaker & Associates and as a member of the civil engineering group at Earth Tech through which she honed her modeling expertise, familiarity with CEQA alternatives analyses, Letters of Map Revision for FEMA and schedule management for complex projects. An expert in her field, Ms. Traynor Smith completed coursework in mechanical engineering and received a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from Boston University.

Driven to remain abreast of changes and advancements in the field, Ms. Traynor Smith aligns herself with several industry organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. In light of her professional accomplishments, she has been honored many times, earning Stormwater Awards for her work on Clean Water Act C3 compliance.

While her career has been filled with highlights including the construction management of a fish ladder project early in her tenure at Stanford, Ms. Traynor Smith takes the most pride in working on a channel widening project at Earth Tech and the complex Searsville Watershed Restoration Project (searsville.stanford.edu). Although she joined both of these projects after their initial development, she quickly advanced each of these with her design and project management acumen. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she also credits her success to some important mentors, Mort Isaacson a professor at BU and Maggie Burgett, a pre-eminent member of the Department of Project Management at Stanford. Looking toward the future, Ms. Traynor Smith intends to explore opportunities at Stanford and beyond.
