RIVERWOODS, IL, July 15, 2024 - Karen Schuman is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. She was recently spotlighted in New York City's Times Square on a 22-story screen that is passed by an estimated 1.5 million people daily. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Recognized for her contributions to building a haven for artistic expression, Ms. Schuman has distinguished herself as the director of the Dancing Krow Studio, a home to the vibrant artist community in the Oak Park neighborhood of Chicago. Initially called "The Art House," the Dancing Krow was first established as part of a community effort to revitalize Oak Park, which had experienced economic stagnation throughout the early 1990s. Since 1996, the gallery has come to feature an eclectic array of pieces from a local artist collective, much of which can be purchased. Additionally, the Dancing Krow offers classes in the shamanic arts, as well as a selection of fine handmade soap and Ms. Schuman's own fiber art pieces.
Ms. Schuman, a devoted artist, works primarily in dyed fabrics, quilts, beadwork and needlecraft. Through these mediums, she has charted the course of her own life. Well-regarded for her work, many of her pieces have been featured in 11 editions of the American Art Collector Book. She also placed first in a competition held in 2021 by the Art League in Oak Park, where she would go on to place second in the following year.
Perceiving her creations as aspects of a divine drama, Ms. Schuman's commitment likewise extends to the shamanic arts. Offering private sessions, she guides those who seek self-discovery on their personal journeys. In essence, Ms. Schuman's artistic and spiritual mission is to foster harmony with the earth and its abundant nature, leading to inner peace and well-being.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Schuman studied secretarial duties and administration at Robert Morris College, after which she went on to undertake coursework in oil painting at the Edward Cathiony Studio of Art. After serving as a personal assistant and junior accounts manager for the Garfield-Linn Advertising Agency, she gradually pivoted her interests toward artistic expression, which culminated in the founding of the Dancing Krow.
As part of her work at the studio, Ms. Schuman is a longtime member of the Oak Park Arts District, through which she has facilitated and hosted workshops for seniors and children who are experiencing homelessness. In the years to come, Ms. Schuman and her husband aspire to develop properties in Costa Rica, where they hope to create new experiences for others to share in.
