Work Experience at Open Doors Media - Diary

After weeks of paperwork, nagging and emails my first day of Work Experience at Open Doors Media was finally here. I didn’t really know what to expect as I had heard conflicting accounts of Work Experience from older students: for some it was a really fantastic and interesting experience and for others it was sitting terrified in the corner waiting for the next tea or coffee order.

Thankfully my Work Experience so far has been varied and interesting, I was immediately made to feel welcome by all the staff here at Open Doors and I was quickly set to work. Yesterday I was helping with the social media at Open Doors – my first post on their Facebook page now has a mighty two likes and we now have over 1400 likes on the Careers World page!

When I had finished looking at the social media pages, I then evaluated some other careers advice websites so that Open Doors could improve theirs, this was particularly interesting because my notes on each of the websites will be used to improve the Careers World website, or secretly thrown in the bin so as to not hurt my feelings.

Despite the fact that I had probably done more work in the morning than my fellow students in their various other placements had done all day, there were more tasks for me –I was taught how to structure interview questions as well and to my surprise I found that some of the practice questions that I had written down were similar to the questions that have been sent to Jessica Ennis (who will be appearing in the next issue of Careers World).

Overall I feel that I had a engaging and enjoyable first day and with a very busy timetable over the next four days that seems set to continue, I can only recommend Open Doors for Work Experience in the media Industry.

"As a provider of resources giving careers information advice and guidance to young people, offering work experience gives us a further insight into the help they need and also allows the student to spend time gaining a valuable insight into the world of work."
