PARKERSBURG, WV, March 05, 2024 - Sara Ann Young, RN, BSN, MSN, OB-GYN clinical nurse specialist with Hartford Hospital, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the West Virginia regional edition of Forbes magazine.
Sara Ann Young worked in the field of nursing for 41 years before her retirement in 2011. At the start of her career, she was a staff nurse at the Camden Clark Memorial Hospital for two years before becoming head nurse of labor and delivery. For the following four years, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a staff nurse at the George Washington University Medical Center until her departure in 1978. For the final 33 years of her career, Ms. Young was an OB-GYN clinical nurse specialist at Hartford Hospital.
Upon acquiring certification as an international board-certified lactation consultant in 1994, Ms. Young was primarily responsible for providing and managing the lactation services of Hartford Hospital. During her last seven years with the institution, she served as co-chair of the women's health nursing divisional research utilization committee. From 2011 to 2018, she maintained registered nurse licensure in West Virginia, where she cared for her mother, who was also a nurse.
Ms. Young was a speaker in the field and clinical associate at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. For 14 years, she was on the planning committee of the March of Dimes Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Nursing Symposium. In a career filled with highlights, Ms. Young is especially proud of coordinating efforts of the department of women's health at Hartford Hospital in 2000, during which time she played a role in helping the hospital to become recognized as the first baby-friendly hospital in Connecticut. Additionally, she was honored to have her mother present at a talk she conducted about Hartford Hospital's journey to become baby-friendly.
To remain current with advancements in nursing, Ms. Young maintains professional alignment with a number of organizations, including the American Nurses Association and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
Ms. Young earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University in 1970 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Catholic University of America in 1977. She also earned certifications as a bereavement counselor and international board-certified lactation consultant.
Ms. Young was presented with a Wyeth Award in 1989 and a Professional Award in 2001 from La Leche League of Connecticut.
