AKRON, OHIO, March 05, 2024 - Michael J. Walzer, retired teacher and coach from Akron Public Schools, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Ohio regional edition of GQ magazine.
Michael J. Walzer desired to enter the field of education from an early age. Having tutored grade school children during his senior year of high school, he discovered his natural love and passion for teaching. Following his high school graduation, Mr. Walzer attended Kent State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1976. For the subsequent three decades, he excelled as a mathematics, science and history teacher for fifth through ninth grade at Akron Public Schools in Akron, Ohio. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, he also coached soccer in the fall and track in the spring while organizing ping-pong tournaments during the winter months.
Throughout his career, Mr. Walzer derived great pleasure from being part of his students' educational journeys, leaving a resounding influence on each student, whether in his athletic programs or his classroom. In this regard, he has always emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities, such as sports, as they supplement students' educational enrichment and teach them the value of collaboration. Though retired in 2006, he became a part-time substitute teacher in 2008, spending more than 10 years in such a capacity at four public school districts and numerous private schools in Summit County, Ohio.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Walzer has volunteered extensively in his community. Active with the Akron Hiking Club, he has volunteered at The Mustill Store and Museum since 2012. Likewise, he has served as a volunteer poll worker for the Summit County Board of Elections since 2016. Congruent to these roles, he is a volunteer tour guide and a speaker on the History of the Canal, having also donated frequently to his alma mater's alumni association.
In accounting for his success, Mr. Walzer credits his terrific upbringing and his Roman Catholic faith. Affectionately known as "Coach Mike" by his former students, he aims to return to substitute teaching in the coming years. In addition, he endeavors to continue spending more time with his family, particularly his grandnieces and grandnephews. This might include substituting in the Tallmadge Public Schools, where his grandnephews, Leo and Luke, will attend as a third grader and first grader, respectively, next fall.
Alongside his career in education, Mr. Walzer is a prolific writer. Notably, he has authored more than 60 letters in the Akron Beacon Journal between 2007 and 2023. Moreover, he has had three poems published by Eber and Wein Publishers: "Staking a Claim" in 2014, "The Many Colors of Vinny Vango" in 2017 and "Hula Hoopla" in 2022. Looking toward the future, Mr. Walzer intends to continue publishing his poetry.
