Mark Berends, Ph.D., has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

SOUTH BEND, IN, February 22, 2024 - Mark Berends, Ph,D, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than three decades of excellence in sociology and education, Dr. Berends has earned distinction as Hackett Family Director Institute for Educational Initiatives and a professor of sociology at the University of Notre Dame. Since 2021, he has focused his efforts on setting the mission, vision and strategic objectives of the institute, collaborating with other colleagues and faculty in their four research centers, the Center for STEM Education, Center for Research on Educational Opportunity, the Global Center for the Development of the Whole Child and their literacy center. He also leads the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), which is dedicated to providing programs to support schools, especially Catholic schools.

Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. Berends lends his expertise as an editor for the American Educational Research Journal and the Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis. He was also elected to the National Academy of Education and was admitted as a fellow to the American Educational Research Association. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American Sociological Association, the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness, the Association for Education Finance and Policy, and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Berends served as a senior social scientist for the RAND Corporation in 1992 and became an associate professor of public policy and education for Vanderbilt University Peabody College in 2002. He subsequently joined the University of Notre Dame as a professor of sociology and director of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity, becoming an associate vice president of research there in 2020. He is particularly proud of his work on the New American Schools program and comprehensive school reform during the late 1990s, where he conducted extensive research that earned federal funding at the beginning of the No Child Left Behind initiative. The program paved the way for charter schools and other innovative reforms to be implemented.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Berends earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Calvin College in 1985. Following this achievement, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in the same field of study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1992.

Within the coming years, Dr. Berends intends to continue his work on school choice, an issue that is expanding rapidly and remains controversial. He also plans to remain at the forefront of the latest advancements in artificial intelligence in education, working closely with his colleagues to discover innovative and effective ways to integrate this technology.
