Meghan Skelton Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Law

CABIN JOHN, MD, February 12, 2024 - Meghan Skelton has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on years of expertise in criminal and international human rights law, Ms. Skelton excels as the owner of an eponymous law firm, through which she specializes in criminal defense, pre-enforcement, post-conviction, expungement, and pardon applications. Similarly, she helps musicians and artists protect their intellectual property. In addition to her work in private practice, she serves as an attorney with the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Previously, Ms. Skelton worked as a supervisory trial attorney and senior litigation counsel for the Military Commissions Defense Organization, where she represented a torture survivor charged in Guantanamo Bay and was named Senior Civilian of the Year.

Over the years, Ms. Skelton gained valuable expertise in criminal defense as an Assistant Federal Public Defender and appellate attorney for the Federal Public Defender for the District of Maryland and the Eastern District of Virginia. During the early stages of her career, she was named the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year at Vinson & Elkins, where she was an associate in the white collar defense practice group. Likewise, Ms. Skelton honed her expertise in law as an appellate attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, where she was hired through the Attorney General's Honors Program, which is highly selective and selects only top-tier law school graduates.

An expert in her field, Ms. Skelton earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and economics from Duke University and a JD from William and Mary Law School, Order of the Coif. She is admitted to practice in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, as well as numerous federal appellate courts. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in emerging victorious after a mandamus case in the District of Columbia, which involved complex legal issues at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

When accounting for her success, Ms. Skelton credits her commitment to causes that are not commonly pursued by others and developing productive working relationships with her clients. In the coming years, she intends to expand her appellate practice and her work representing artists.
