Over the past few years, it seemed more people were starting to care less about the food they were consuming and where it was sourced, which may have been down to the current economic climate. However, recent statistics show that although a small one, there has been an increase in sales of organic produce sold in supermarkets, illustrating the care that is being taken when it comes to buying goods.
At one time, it seemed the butchery trade was becoming, quite frankly, obsolete. The old tradition of walking down to your local butcher and having a chat while picking up the meat for that night was seemingly no longer, but this may all have changed. More and more butchers shops were being closed down due to sales being at an all time low, however the newly released statistics show that this may no longer be the case and butchers won't have to hang up their butchers knives for good.
The figures released have shown the rise in organic sales over the past three months have increased by a mere 1.6%. Kantar Worldpanel released the figures and although it is only a small growth, it is a great improvement compared to the decline that could be seen over the past four years. This could ultimately be great news for butchers all over the country, knowing that people are choosing quality over low prices.
It is thought that the increase in organic sales may be partly due to the recent horse meat scandal and as the sales increased following the outrage, it seems like a possible conclusion. After the scandal came to light, there was seen to be a decrease in sales of processed meat and quite rightly, consumers were opting for food that could be traced, coming from a trustworthy source.
This is where the local butcher comes in. With the same produce being available from a reliable source, people are putting their faith in butchers rather than the supermarket. Shortly after the horse meat scandal, further figures were released which showed a growth of people visiting their local butcher, with their sales increasing. Hopefully the old traditions are back and here to stay.
