Ella Prakash’s first solo show in India inspires women to shed their inhibitions

The Bahrain-based artist’s first solo show in India inspires women to shed their inhibitions

Most of her work is born from Ella Prakash’s personal experiences. She notes the reactions of people, particularly women, along with events, and makes them part of her paintings. The self-taught artist raised in Bahrain, always wanted a show in India.

“I usually deal with how women stop doing what they want, because they tend to put others and their opinions first. My works are about liberation. They send a message about expressing oneself in the world, by creating your own identity and surprising those around,” said Prakash, whose works are available to the public at the Courtyard by Marriott in Gurgaon.

The exhibition titled Enchanted reveals her love for bright colour. Orange, blue and red dominates the semi-abstract works.“Women have a vibrant effect on the lives of people close to them,” shared Prakash, who has been painting for two decades. “Their positive energy reflects in the tones that I have chosen.”

In most of the paintings, you notice human figures merge with the background, appearing as flying forms. It seems Ella starts by paintings with these figures, then makes her paintings semi-abstract.

“I don’t wish to paint women alone. That said, the faint outlines I have used suggest they should not be judged by outer appearance alone. A woman’s personality relates to what she thinks and achieves, not her outward figure or form.”

Explaining her background, the artist remarked, “I belong to a traditional family, where women don’t go out much. So my works dwell on aspects that would empower them. I’m satisfied, if I have inspired a few people. I know their problems are not based on any one country or religion. Similarly, women across the globe have universal emotions. I want to connect to them everywhere.”

She said it is sometimes tough to find new topics concerning the fairer sex. “Then I focus on myself.” Prakash will be in Bahrain when this goes to print, but before she left, Ella told us that she intends to return with a bigger show in the future. The exhibition continues till April 29.
