WEST ORANGE, NJ, December 20, 2023 - Wendy R. Schuman has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who in America for 2024. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Schuman co-founded Grad Life Choices, a nonprofit organization based in New Jersey. A talented freelance writer and editor, she has successfully provided her expertise to unemployed and underemployed recent college graduates as they navigate their professional futures. Through the assistance of volunteer coaches and mentors, these young professionals have access to a team of certified life and career coaches who generously donate their time remotely via Skype and FaceTime video calls. Since the organization's inception in 2012, Ms. Schuman and her team have assisted over 500 graduates and counting.
The concept for Grad Life Choices stemmed from the 2008 recession, which prevented many college graduates from securing jobs due to the lack of employment available at the time. Collaborating with her husband, a certified life coach, Ms. Schuman wanted to provide support and expertise to help young graduates of limited means by offering pro bono coaching services. By 2012, they had secured over 25 coaches to join the team, providing free online coaching services. In time, their nonprofit grew exponentially, with over 100 coaches now participating.
Highly experienced in writing and editing content on parenthood, family issues, and career development, Ms. Schuman leverages her former tenure to give back. She has served as a judge for the National Mature Media Awards and the National Magazine Awards, as well as a panelist for the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Looking toward the future, Ms. Schuman aims to continue providing much-needed mentorship to the younger generation, positively impacting their lives and the world around them.
Ms. Schuman began her career as a copy editor for Mademoiselle Magazine. She subsequently joined Parents Magazine, recognized as the oldest and largest parenting magazine in the U.S., working her way up to the role of executive editor between 1980 and 2000. From there, she became family editor and managing editor for Beliefnet.com in New York City, a multi-faith, religion, spirituality, and inspiration website, from 2000 to 2010 until another organization bought out the company. Additionally, Ms. Schuman held various freelance positions with such online publications as Parents.com, NextAvenue.com, and GrandMagazine.com.
Among her many professional accomplishments, Ms. Schuman produced "From the Ashes: A Spiritual Response to the Attacks on America" via Rodale in 2001, co-authored and edited "The Big Book of Angels" via Rodale in 2003, and co-authored "Millennials in Wonderland: Coaching Grads at the Crossroads of Life and Career" via Grandview Publishing in 2018. She was editor of a series of books on religion published by Doubleday/Three Leaves Press in 2005 and 2006. She also contributed to numerous national magazines and websites, including Forbes.com, The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, and the Christian Science Monitor, among others.
Besides her paid positions and nonprofit efforts, Ms. Schuman has given back in other ways. She was a volunteer tutor with BlueWave Succeed2Gether from 2010 to 2012. She is also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Montclair, New Jersey.
Ms. Schuman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in French language and literature, magna cum laude, from Tufts University in 1968, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She also garnered a Master of Science in journalism from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in 1972. During her studies at Columbia, Ms. Schuman was awarded an Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Grant from the Newswomen of New York.
