VENTURA, CA, November 16, 2023 - Richard E. Simon has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leveraging more than three decades of excellence as a skilled prosecutor, Mr. Simon has earned distinction as the senior deputy district attorney for the County of Ventura. Having started out in the misdemeanor unit, prosecuting mostly DUI cases, vandalism, batteries and shoplifting cases, since 1985 he has focused his efforts on arson prosecution. He also specialized in domestic violence and auto shaft cases, now handling only homicides. He is most proud to have worked on a groundbreaking arson case, where he conducted research on prior fires in an individual's previous neighborhood, submitting these prior fires as evidence of a pattern.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Simon was named a National Champion Debater and received a Best Advocate Award from the Regional Mock Moot Court. He was also honored as Prosecutor of the Year from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2004 and was named Ventura County Prosecutor of the Year in 2000 and 2008. He has successfully prosecuted many high-profile murder cases over the course of his career as was a key prosecutor on the team for the infamous "Golden State Killer" case. Outside of his primary career efforts, Mr. Simon wrote a mystery thriller novel, "Bring Me to Life," which published in 2021. He has also lent his expertise as a mock trial coach for Newbury Parl High School for the past nine years.
To prepare for his law career, Mr. Simon earned a bachelor's degree in political science from California State University, Northridge in 1980. Following this achievement, he attained a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in 1983. He is also a valued member of the California District Attorneys Association, the Ventura County Prosecutors Association and the California Conference of Arson Investigators.
Within the coming years, Mr. Simon intends to complete his present homicide cases before making a decision on retirement. He teaches cross-examination in the office to the new attorneys and plans to devote more time as an instructor, continuing his commitment to coaching mock trials as well.
