Working toward a career centered around medicine, Dr. Hauer-Jensen attended the University of Oslo, where he received a Doctor of Medicine in 1977. Thereafter, he completed a post-doctorate in radiation biology through the University of Iowa before earning a Doctor of Philosophy in radiation biology in 1988 for his doctorate alma mater. Following his education, Dr. Hauer-Jensen worked as a staff surgeon and director for the clinical trials office of The Norwegian Radium Hospital, a role he held for a year before immigrating to the United States in 1990.
After immigrating to the U.S., Dr. Hauer-Jensen worked as a staff surgeon at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, where he stayed for over 25 years. In addition, he joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). When he first started at UAMS, he served as the chief resident of surgery; thereafter, he became the instructor of surgery before taking on the role of first assistant professor, then associate professor, and finally professor of surgery and pathology, a position he held for nearly 25 years.
At UAMS, Dr. Hauer-Jensen now serves as a professor of pharmaceutical sciences, the associate dean for research in the College of Pharmacy, and as the director of the division of radiation health, positions he has held for over 15 years. Most recently, he was named Professor Emeritus. Alongside his work at the university-level, he has authored over 300 scientific articles and book chapters and serves on several national and international advisory boards and review panels. While he was a surgeon and researcher, he focused on radiation research, specifically on radiation's effects on normal tissues, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract.
Dr. Hauer-Jensen's research received funding from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Agency. Adding to his impressive resume, he is the former chair of the radiation study section of the National Institutes of Health. In all he has accomplished, Dr. Hauer-Jensen attributes his success to being at the right place at the right time. In the next five to 10 years, his goal is to see the division he founded at UAMS 15 years ago continue to grow and prosper.
