LYNN, MA, October 24, 2023 - Don Heflin has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Heflin is an educator and retired Foreign Service Officer currently focusing on mentoring the next generation of foreign affairs and diplomacy experts. Inspired by his parents, who emphasized the value of education, and by his early exposure to international news via the excellent coverage in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama's newspaper and the many immigrants in the community, Mr. Heflin pursued a broad range of postsecondary educational opportunities. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1983, and an additional Bachelor of Arts in political science and religion from Birmingham-Southern College, graduating magna cum laude in 1980. As a mid-career professional, Mr. Heflin continued his studies at the National War College, which awarded him a Master of Science in National Security Strategy in 2004.

In 1987, Mr. Heflin began a 35-year career as a United States Foreign Service Officer, during which he served proudly in locations throughout India, Mexico, and Africa. He is most proud of his work as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Cabo Verde. Between 2015 and 2018, he was instrumental in overseeing the local United States Embassy and nurturing positive international relations through policy and public diplomacy, including extensive travel throughout the country and work on behalf of local citizens. Under his leadership, the United States Embassy's social media pages were the second most popular in Cabo Verde, behind their President's. Mr. Heflin retired from the United States Foreign Service in 2023, and was named a Senior Fellow of The Fletcher School at Tufts University, where he teaches diplomacy in addition to being Executive Director of the School's Edward R. Murrow Center.

Mr. Heflin credits his success to his lifelong passion for foreign and international affairs, and emphasizes the need for increased public awareness of these matters and their impact on everyday life. He looks forward to being able to continue to have a positive impact on his field, his community, and his country as an educator and mentor, and remains committed to boosting public interest in international diplomacy. In his personal time, Mr. Heflin enjoys spending time outdoors walking, canoeing, sailing, travelling, following college football, and is a vintage and antique motorsports enthusiast.
