Additionally, she served as the vice chair of the Global Fund's Evaluation Technical Working Group. An expert in her field, she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from Spellman College in 1989 and a Master of Public Health in international health with a minor in epidemiology from Emory University in 1992. Subsequently, Dr. Lemma expanded upon her professional knowledge, earning a Master of Philosophy in tropical medicine with a specialization in parasitology and a PhD in tropical medicine with specializations in immunology and epidemiology from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
In recognition of her professional achievements, Dr. Lemma has been honored on many occasions, earning fellowships through Rotary International and the National Institute of Health, and Certificates of Appreciation through Jimma University, Amhara Regional Health Bureau, Oromia Regional Health Bureau, Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Ras Desta Damtew Memorial Hospital, Mekele University's College of Health Sciences. She also earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia in 2016 and was named a Top 20 Africa's Business Hero through Jack Ma Foundation. While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in changing people's minds and making them aware of the importance of a accessing their secure medical record as a form of social equity and human right, as well as obtaining her PhD in tropical medicine. The cornerstone of her success lay in her faith, perseverance, her parents, and her late sister.
